About the Company
The company was founded in 1969 as a family business. The first restaurant was opened in Santa Barbara, California. It was initially called the Hamburger Habit, and specialized in the making of burgers. The restaurant owners divorced in 1980 and decided to sell the restaurant to one of their cooks, Brent Reichard. Reichard and his younger brother Bruce had big dreams for the restaurant. Their goal was to make top quality burgers and sell them at a reasonable price.
With this goal in mind, they started looking for the freshest ingredients to include in their burgers. They also decided to diversify their menu to include tuna, chicken sandwiches with bacon strips, malts and salads. Their commitment to quality never wavered and this began to show results with time. Within a short period, the company had opened a number of other restaurants in California and beyond.
The restaurant caught the eye of a private equity firm. The KarpReilly firm bought the young company in 2007 after which it grew exponentially.
